Recall Alert! FDA Finds Radiation in Shrimp Sold at Walmart

Walmart has issued a recall on frozen shrimp after the FDA found evidence that some of it has been contaminated by radiation.

What’s the Problem With Walmart Shrimp?

According to Forbes, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that some Great Value brand frozen shrimp sold at Walmart could be contaminated with radioactive isotope Cesium-137.

The shrimp was reportedly on its way to Walmart stores to be sold when it was discovered to have radiation in it at customs.

Customs and Border Protection found the same radioactive element in different shrimp shipments headed to Walmart at four different ports of entry. That means that there was more than one instance of the substance reported, making the FDA very cautious.

Here is where it gets a little tricky. The shrimp hadn’t hit Walmart shelves yet, but the FDA requested a recall due to the fact that there could be more out there that the agency is not aware of.

The specific shipments are coming from Indonesian producer BMS Foods.

They were reportedly “prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions” and could have also been contaminated.

The FDA contacted executives at Walmart suggesting a recall, and according to the Associated Press, the company has now recalled shrimp that’s been sold in 13 states across America.

Which Shrimp From Walmart Is Subject to Recall?

Here is what to look for on the label of the shrimp in question:

Great Value frozen raw shrimp with the lot codes 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1.

All of the affected shrimp have a sell-by date of 3/15/2027.

What Happens If You Consume Radioactive Cesium-137?

Consuming radioactive Cesium-137 can have serious health consequences, including an increased risk of cancer, radiation sickness and in severe cases, even death.

What Do I Do If I Have a Recalled Product?

The FDA recommends that you throw the product out right away or bring it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
