Alan Parsons, Ambrosia, Peter Beckett, Al Stewart, and more have pulled out of the smooth rock festival scheduled for late October
Sunset Fest Cabo — the luxury event billed as a yacht rock paradise on the sandy shores of Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico — is facing rough waters as a majority of the artists scheduled for the three-day lineup have suddenly dropped from the roster.
Headliner Alan Parsons announced on Tuesday that due to “circumstances outside of Alan Parson Live Project’s control” their performance at Sunset Fest Cabo will “no longer be taking place.” Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Al Stewart, Peter Beckett, and Pablo Cruise also shared similar statements in the past week.
Ambrosia, whose frontman Joe Puerta previously hailed the Cabo event the “WOODSTOCK OF YACHT ROCK” also announced that they will not be performing. “We are deeply saddened at the sudden turn of events that has forced us into this decision,” wrote the band on social media. The group clarified that the decision to cancel “had nothing to do with health issues of the band.”
The festival, which is slated to make its debut on Oct. 24 and run until Oct. 26, has not officially been canceled, although tickets on the event website appear to no longer be available for purchase. While Parsons and Loggins — the Saturday and Sunday headliners, respectively — have pulled out, Friday headliner Rick Springfield is still scheduled to appear (a rep for Springfield did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment). Fans inquiring on ticket refunds were directed to contact their point of purchase.
Despite the lineup fallout, the event’s homepage has not taken down its invite to have an “unforgettable experience” with “world-class performances, luxury accommodations, and thrilling excursions.” However, links to VIP and resort packages appear to be broken.
A representative for Sunset Fest Cabo did not immediately return Rolling Stone‘s request for comment.
Soft rock fans took to the comment sections on Instagram, likening the succession of drop outs to the doomed Fyre Fest, with comments ranging from “the Fyre Fest of Yacht Rock” to “The Fyre Fest for Boomers.” (Funny enough, Rolling Stone once compared Fyre Fest to “the millennial Woodstock.”)
