It’s been five long years since Snail Mail released an album. But the wait is over: Lindsey Jordan is back with Ricochet, out March 27 via Matador.
To preview the record, Jordan dropped the lead single “Dead End,” a wistful rocker soaked in Nineties guitar hooks and lyrics that yearn for a simpler time — when you could park in a dead end of your suburban neighborhood and smoke with your friends. “And the sound of your name/Brings down the perennial rain,” Jordan sings, before the track erupts into a blissful “nah-nah-nah” singalong. It’s great to have her back.
In the video above, which Jordan co-directed with Elsie Richter, she’s seen walking around her home of North Carolina, complete with fireworks and a cameo from her dog, Pip. “We shot the video for ‘Dead End’ in random places all around rural North Carolina between the hours of 5 p.m. and 4 a.m. on one of the coldest nights of my life,” she said. “The goal was to be inconspicuous with the fireworks, but someone called the cops on us.”
Ricochet marks Jordan’s third album, after 2021’s Valentine and her 2018 breakout LP, Lush. She wrote the album in the midst of moving from New York City to North Carolina, and recorded it in both of these places, alongside producer and Momma bassist Aron Kobayashi Ritch. Jordan says she felt “refreshing, trusting, and comfortable” during the sessions, writing the lyrics last. “I’ve never done this before,” she said. “But I wrote all of the instrumentals and vocal melodies on the piano or guitar, and then I filled in the lyrics all at once over a year.”
Jordan also revealed North American tour dates in support of Ricochet, which kicks off on April 10 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She’ll hit major cities — including Brooklyn, Atlanta, and Los Angeles — before concluding in Salt Lake City on May 15, at Kilby Block Party. She’ll head overseas the following month, playing London’s Electric Ballroom on June 26. Tickets go on sale Friday.
