The new LP marks the Dominican artist’s long-awaited debut
Tokischa took Madison Square Garden by surprise when she shaved her head onstage while opening for FKA Twigs this week. But now the unexpected act makes a lot of sense: The Dominican musician has officially announced her long-awaited debut album Amor & Droga, which arrives April 17.
“One of the most liberating moments of my life —a rebirth, a new beginning. And what better place to reveal that vulnerability than the stage? Transforming my desires and life experiences into a work of art is the very reason I love being an artist,” Tokischa wrote in an Instagram post. “I will express myself however I choose, even if I am forbidden from doing so. That is freedom — and that freedom stems from the self-assurance I feel deep within. It is a freedom I grant myself, and no one will ever take it away from me.”

During an interview with El Gordo y la Flaca’s Gelena Solano, Tokischa explained the move to start anew. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” she said. “I’m closing a huge chapter in my life with the release of my album, Amor y Droga, and l’m so, so excited.” She continued: “I’ve wanted to do this since I was a little girl…. l wanted to turn it into a performance as part of the message of the album, which is a message of self-love which is, ‘I don’t care what anyone says, l’m going to do what I want to do.’”
Along with the announcement and release date, Tokischa also revealed the album cover and track list. Amor & Droga is a 17-song project with features from Latin artist Kase. O and Russian pop singer Bulin. The LP has been a longtime coming: Since first releasing music in 2021, Tokischa has risen as one of Latin music’s most exciting stars, working with J Balvin, Rosalía, Madonna, Ozuna, and more.
