Ella Langley’s breakout hit almost never happened.
Before “You Look Like You Love Me” became one of the biggest country songs of the past few years, it was a track that nearly got scrapped entirely.
In fact, Langley says she had to fight to release it at all.
A Song No One Expected to Work
Long before the awards and chart success, “You Look Like You Love Me” wasn’t taken seriously.

Langley revealed the song was originally written as a joke with co-writer Aaron Raitiere — not something anyone expected to turn into a hit.
Even Riley Green, who joined her on the track, had doubts, later admitting he thought it leaned too traditional to work on country radio.
Her Label Didn’t Believe in It Either
As it turns out, the skepticism didn’t stop there.
On comedian Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, Langley said her label actively pushed back on the song — especially its now-signature spoken-word style.
“Everyone told me that song was not gonna work,” she said. “After we cut it, they were like, ‘We really think you need to sing these verses.’ I was like, ‘I’m not singing it…’ I just fought them really hard on it.”

At one point, she said she was even told it would be the worst-performing song on her debut album: “They were like, ‘This is going to be the worst-performing song on the record.’”
Sticking With What Felt Right
Despite the pressure, Langley trusted her instincts.
“I didn’t know what it was going to do, but I believed that it was different,” she said. “I believed that it was something that made me smile, and I enjoyed singing it.”
She added that once she commits to a song, it’s because she truly believes in it.
From Doubts to a Career-Changing Hit
That decision ended up changing everything.
“You Look Like You Love Me” went on to rack up hundreds of millions of streams, hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart and earn multiple ACM and CMA Awards.
It also helped launch Langley into a new level of stardom, setting the stage for her continued success — including the record-breaking run of “Choosin’ Texas.”
Not bad for a song that almost didn’t make it out at all.
