Scheduled for release in 2027 via Prime Video, the biographical release will feature interviews with external sources who know her best
The life and times of Lily Allen will serve as the basis for an upcoming documentary feature from Prime Video. Set for release in 2027, the currently untitled project will reflect on the artist’s rise from MySpace, where she posted her earliest mixtapes and demos, to her latest album West End Girl, about the dissolution of her marriage to actor David Harbour.
Prime Video describes the documentary as “a story of resilience, reinvention, and an artist reclaiming her narrative on her own terms,” though it is unclear what level of involvement Allen had in its creation. The film will rely on interviews from “those who know her best.” Specific participants have not been revealed.
The streamer frames the release as “intimate,” much like the way Allen has historically approached her music. The singer-songwriter largely slipped away from the spotlight of music following the release of her 2018 album, No Shame. When she made her grand return seven years later with West End Girl, she spared no detail as she documented the beginning and end of her relationship through song.
“Since crash-landing into the indie blogosphere two decades ago, Lily Allen’s greatest strength has been her voice — an airy soprano that can communicate disdain with a sighed lyric or an audible eye roll,” Rolling Stone wrote in a review of the record. “It’s helped her stand out even as she’s shape-shifted through genres — and as she’s dealt with press scrutiny, label woes, artist-on-artist tiffs, and strife in her personal life.”
Prime Video recruited director Mat Whitecross, who previously helmed films about Oasis (2016’s Supersonic) and Coldplay (2018’s A Head Full of Dreams), for the documentary. An exact release date has not been set, though the streamer is planning on including a theatrical release window. “This is Lily Allen as she’s never been seen before,” a description of film reads. “Raw, real, and redefining what it means to thrive in the spotlight.”
