Steve Lacy Spoils ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

The identity of Sadie Sink’s character in the new Spider-Man movie is top secret, but Lacy may not have known that

Spider-Man has faced a long list of villains since his creation in 1963, from the well-known (Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin) to the totally ridiculous (The Hypno-Hustler, Videoman). But the latest addition to the list was beyond the imagination of even comic-book creators: Steve Lacy. Yes, that Steve Lacy, of “Bad Habit” fame, who just released his excellent third album, Oh Yeah?

The identity of Sadie Sink’s character in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, out Friday (which features the title track of Lacy’s new album), has been a tightly guarded secret. But someone may have forgotten to tell Lacy, who, to be fair, is probably busy promoting his album. During a red carpet interview that appeared on the movie premiere’s official livestream, an interviewer asked Lacy what character in the movie he was most excited about — and specified no spoilers.

In his answer, Lacy casually dropped the name of Sink’s character, and went into detail about her role. The interviewer visibly panicked, and fans all over social media went bananas —  jokes about Lacy’s impending assassination at the hands of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige abounded.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton explained why Sink’s character was kept secret — and why he wasn’t worried about fans’ reactions if they found the answer satisfying. “If people are gonna get mad, I can’t control that,” he said. “I wish everything was a secret. Some people wanna know everything, and some people don’t. There are certain people like me — if I know I’m gonna watch a movie, I try not to even watch the trailers. But you’ll see when you watch the movie that there’s a very real reason not to tell people who Sadie Sink is playing. And I don’t think you’ll get mad at it. I think you’ll be like, “Oh, I’m glad I didn’t know that.”
