Songs by Pharrell, Elton John, and Lainey Wilson, as well as multiple selections from Emelia Pérez, have made the Oscars’ shortlist for Best Original Song.
Pharrell’s “Piece by Piece,” the title track from his animated Lego biopic, made the cut, as did John’s “Never Too Late,” co-written with Brandi Carlile for his recent documentary. And Wilson secured a shortlist nod for her contribution to Twisters, “Out of Oklahoma,” co-written with Luke Dick and Shane McAnally.
The two songs from Emilia Pérez to make the shortlist were “El Mal” and “Mi Comino,” both of which were just nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. The two tracks were written by the film’s core musical team, Clément Ducol and Camille, while writer-director Jacque Audiard also contributed to “El Mal.”
The 15-song shortlist also includes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “Compress/Repress” from Challengers; Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Tell Me It’s You” from Mufasa, and Robbie Williams’ “Forbidden Road” from his upcoming primate-infused biopic, Better Man. Perennial Oscar hopeful Diane Warren is once again in the running, making the shortlist for “The Journey” from Tyler Perry’s new WWII drama, The Six Triple Eight. (Warren has been nominated 15 times, and while she’s never won a competitive Oscar, she did receive an Honorary Award in 2022.)
Another exciting shortlist nod was “Sick in the Head” by celebrated Belfast rap trio Kneecap from their lightly fictionalized biopic. Maren Morris snuck onto the list, too, as a co-writer on Delacey’s “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, as did Kristen Wiig, who co-wrote “Harper and Will Go West” from Will Ferrell and Harper Steele’s doc, Will and Harper.
The full Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song is below. Other Academy Awards shortlist categories released today include Best International Film, Documentary, Animated and Live Action Best Makeup, Visual Effects, and Sound.
The official nominees for the 97th Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 17, 2025. The show will be held March 2.
