Leela James Releases New Single “What U Need” – New R&B Music, Songs & Interviews

Acclaimed R&B songstress Leela James has officially released her sultry new single, “What U Need.” The grown-and-sexy track, driven by her unmistakably raspy vocal delivery and a smooth groove, is available now across all major digital streaming platforms alongside an official music video.

Directed by Freddie Dang, the accompanying visual pays direct homage to the beloved 1993 Black cinema classic Poetic Justice. By drawing upon the film’s nostalgic romance and iconic imagery, James continues a running creative thread from her previous releases, celebrating the cultural legacy of Black cinema while injecting her own soulful spin into a timeless love story.

Thematically, the single celebrates a grounded connection that transcends grand gestures, focusing instead on standing beside a partner through life’s highs and lows. James sings from the empowered perspective of a woman who knows her worth and actively offers peace of mind.

“This song is about that grown kind of love. The kind where you know what you bring to the table and you’re not afraid to show it,” James shared regarding the release. “It’s about being somebody’s peace, their partner, their safe place, but still keeping that spark alive. And sometimes you just gotta remind somebody that you’ve got exactly what they need.”

The new release builds seamlessly upon the momentum of her 2025 studio project, 2BHONEST, and its subsequent deluxe edition, which featured fan-favorite cuts like “Right On Time” and “Honest.”

This fall, she will share stages across the country alongside Anthony Hamilton, with select appearances featuring Raheem DeVaughn. The upcoming tour itinerary includes highly anticipated performances in Virginia, Mississippi, and Georgia.

“What U Need” is available to stream and download now, and the official music video can be viewed on YouTube.
