After visiting Jeremy Allen White on set, Bruce Springsteen had nothing but praise for the actor who’s set to portray him in the forthcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere.
In a new interview on Sirius XM’s Springsteen station, “E Street Radio,” Springsteen said it was a bit weird going to a movie set to watch someone else play him. But because White is “such a terrific actor,” Springsteen said, “you just fall right into it.”
White Springsteen went on to say, “He’s got an interpretation of me that I think the fans will deeply recognize. He’s just done a great job. I’ve had a lot of fun being on the set when I can get there.”
And maybe most importantly, Springsteen said of White, “He sings well, he sings very well.”
Springsteen also shared kind words for other members of the cast, including Jeremy Strong, who’s playing Springsteen’s longtime manager and producer, Jon Landau, and Odessa Young, who’s playing a love interest named Faye.
“There’s a tremendous cast of people,” Springsteen said. “They cast the film beautifully, so it’s very exciting.” (The cast also boasts Paul Walter Hauser, Stephen Graham, Gaby Hoffman, Marc Maron, David Krumholtz, and Johnny Cannizzaro.)
Deliver Me From Nowhere is based on Warren Zanes’ 2023 book of the same name and will center around the making of Springsteen’s 1982 album, Nebraska. Production on the film, which was directed by Scott Cooper, began last fall and it’s set to arrive in theaters sometime in 2025.
In an interview with GQ last year, White spoke about all the work he’s done to prepare for the performance, including deep YouTube dives into all the different periods of Springsteen’s life and career. He also said, “I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars. I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
Springsteen, for his part, has remained loosely involved, visiting the set and making himself available to White and Cooper. In his recent “Musicians on Musicians” conversation with Zach Bryan for Rolling Stone, Springsteen said, “I’ve seen the scripts, and I’ve talked to the director. They’re just putting it all together, so I don’t have an awful lot to say about it, but I’m excited about it happening … It’s an interesting story, and the script is really good. I feel good about the whole project.”
