Walker Hayes Absolutely Goes There With New Song, 5 to 9 [Listen]

An emoji review of Walker Hayes‘ new song “5 to 9” looks like this: 😳

Fans of “Fancy Like” longing for (too much?) more information about the singer and his wife Laney will appreciate the playful new country cut. Hayes recognizes Dolly Parton and her hit “9 to 5,” but says he does his best work after hours.

“From 5 to 9, 5 to 9 / Forget that dollar, going home to a dime,” he sings to start each chorus.

Laura Veltz, Mike Robinson and Shane McAnally helped him write lyrics to “5 to 9.” Earlier this month, wife Laney signaled her approval.

“5 to 9” serves as more than just a Laney appreciation song — will be able to insert their personal story into lyrics that reconnect him with the blue collar crowd that fell in love with the Applebee’s song. He’s sort of like Gretchen Wilson in how he speaks to the Walmart crowd, and songs released since 2021 haven’t strayed necessarily. He has explored new territory on subsequent albums and songs.

This new song is either a standalone release, or one from an upcoming project. Hayes is finished touring for the year, with just a single show in November listed on his official website.

Here Are the Lyrics to Walker Hayes, “5 to 9”:

Brick work, stick work / What the forklift work / Gotta get paid y’all, I don’t give a shift work / What I gotta do to keep the lights on / So I can turn ‘em off and turn my wife on / Pardon me Dolly, with all due respect / 9 to 5 slaps but I like to sweat …

Chorus:
From 5 to 9, 5 to 9 / Forget that dollar, going home to a dime / In her Walmart jeans looking like a million bucks / She’s the only ladder that I wanna climb up / From 5 to 9, 5 to 9 / I do my best work when it’s quittin’ time / Yeah I love making money, but y’all I gotta run / Honey wants some honey / So Ima get her done from / 5 to 9.

Hey y’all I wake up with the birds / Don’t stop, get it get it / Caffeine, nicotine, sip it sip it, dip it dip it / Takes all I got not to tell the boss where to stick it / Get that paycheck then I come home with it to my girl / She the best dang thing in the world / Loves my lovin’ more than diamonds and pearls / So if the double-wide’s rockin’ / Don’t you dare come knock, knock, knockin’.

Repeat Chorus

Yeah she’s the kinda job you don’t get the working blues from / Just thinkin’ bout punching that clock gives me goosebumps / Best believe the finest work I do is from …

Repeat Chorus
