Lizzo Clarifies Gap Year Remarks, Confirms Working on New Music, Yitty

The singer announced plans for a gap year in August but has since clarified that she has still been chipping away at new music and her shapewear brand

Lizzo hasn’t been lounging around during the gap year she announced she was embarking on while vacationing in Bali. Since getting back from her trip, the musician has been locked in working on new music and further developing her shapewear brand, Yitty.

“It ain’t a gap year, it’s a grind year,” Lizzo said at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit on Monday, Oct. 14. “I launched my company Yitty in 2022 at the same time as my album, Special … As soon as I stepped down home from tour — I may not be as public-facing — but I went straight to Yitty headquarters. I’ve just been working, working, working. You may not see me, but I’ve been working.”

In April, Lizzo had to clarify similar comments she had made about quitting music. In the midst of a flurry of allegations surrounding sexual harassment and hostile workplace claims, she posted on Instagram saying: “I Quit.” Shortly after, she clarified that she meant she was quitting “giving any negative energy attention.”

“What I’m not gonna quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people,” she said at the time. “Cause I know I’m not alone. In no way, shape, or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive.”

Part of that journey has included a shift in focus towards her approach to health and body positivity. “One inevitability we all have to face is that our bodies will change … it’s a beautiful thing,” she shared. “My body is nobody’s business, other than me, my doctor, my trainer and my man.” She’s also back in the studio working on music that she’s “really really proud of,” she said on the panel.
