Selena Gomez Cites Health Flare-Up in Response to Body Shaming Comment

The singer addressed a social media poster directly when they published — and later deleted — a TikTok speculating about her appearance at the Emilia Pérez premiere

In late October, Selena Gomez attended the Los Angeles premiere of the Netflix film Emilia Perez, in which she plays a leading role. It’s a role she previously said she has been dreaming of landing. The film arrived to Netflix on Friday, but instead of celebrating the release, Gomez has been defending herself in the comments of a TikTok post that led social media users to speculate about how she looked at the premiere.

“This makes me sick,” Gomez commented beneath a since-deleted video. “I have [SIBO] in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a stick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.” In the video, Gomez could be seen posing on the carpet and occasionally placing her hands in front of her stomach.

SIBO, or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, is caused by an abnormal increase in bacteria that isn’t commonly found in that area of the digestive track, according to Mayo Clinic. Gomez has also previously been open about her experience with lupus, an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs. She received a kidney transplant in 2017 followed by rounds of chemotherapy.

Gomez has echoed this sentiment of prioritizing being human over anything else for years, particularly as it pertains to her health and celebrity. “I don’t have another reinvention story,” she told Rolling Stone in 2022. “I’m 30, and I’m going to go through moments in my life … I remind myself that I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the psychotic break, if it wasn’t for my lupus, if it wasn’t for my diagnosis. I think I would just probably be another annoying entity that just wants to wear nice clothes all the time. I’m depressed thinking about who I would be.”
