Mortimer, Damian Marley ‘In My Life’ Video: Watch Unsettling New Clip

Rising reggae star Mortimer and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley have dropped a powerful and unsettling new visual for their recent collaboration, “In My Time.”

Like the song, the new visual — directed by Pete Beng — takes stock of the state of the world in several clever, surreal, and haunting ways. In one early sequence, for instance, Mortimer’s sunglasses turn into a projector that beams out all kinds of global chaos. Later, Mortimer and Marley perform the song amidst actors playing out vignettes that grapple with senseless violence and the more destructive, debilitating aspects of technology.

In a statement, Mortimer said he wrote “In My Time” while feeling “overwhelmed by the state of humanity… The trickery; the injustice towards others, and even ourselves; the hypocrisy and imbalance in our approach to life and living.” He also channeled this sensibility into the music itself, working with producer Winta James to create a sound that could “reflect the feeling of the times; spooky and aggressive at the same time. Ghostly in a way; heart pulling, emotional.”

Mortimer added: “I started to realize that fear was being used to drive humanity by the ones who placed themselves in charge. Self-appointed Gods of the earth, who seek to destroy the very fabric of our existence… The politics and pollution of both earth and mind. The corruption of man and his soul. The selfishness and greed. I see a society built on the backs of many. Backs that have become the foot stools for many that have pretended to have humanity’s best interest at heart. I’ve seen crime eat away at communities; murder has become somewhat of a sport; all regard for life has been lost.”

“In My Time” appears on Mortimer’s debut album, From Within, which arrived back in September via Overstand Entertainment and Easy Star Records.
