The Hit Me Hard and Soft single snuck past Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” during the final weeks of the year
Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” appears to have snuck past Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” at the buzzer to become the most-streamed song on Spotify of 2024.
According to Variety, the Hit Me Hard and Soft single finished out the year with 1,775,172,881 streams in 2024. That gave it about 650,000 more streams than Carpenter’s “Espresso,” which ended the year with 1,774,525,704 streams on Spotify.
The achievement garnered a celebratory post on X from Eilish’s label, Interscope Records. A rep for Spotify did not immediately return Rolling Stone’s request for more official year-end data.
“Birds of a Feather” ostensibly secured the most-streamed song of the year crown thanks to a big surge during the final weeks of 2024. Back in early December, when Spotify launched its annual Wrapped event, “Birds of a Feather” was actually third on the platform’s list for the Top 10 Most-Streamed Songs Globally, behind “Espresso” at Number One and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” at Number Two.
Eilish released Hit Me Hard and Soft — her third studio album — in May, while “Birds of a Feather” arrived as a single in July. The pop star went on to drop a music video for the song in September and performed it when she appeared as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live in October.
“Birds of a Feather” also secured several Grammy nominations, including looks for Record and Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. In total, Eilish earned seven Grammy nods, and will also compete for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for Hit Me Hard and Soft); Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the “Guess” remix with Charli XCX; and Best Dance Pop Recording for “L’amour De Ma Vie” (Over Now Extended Edit).
