Morgan Freeman Duets ‘Let’s Stay Together’ With Al Green: Watch

The duet occurred at Freeman’s blues bar in Mississippi on New Year’s Eve

Morgan Freeman surprised the patrons at his Mississippi bar Ground Zero on New Year’s Eve by joining music legend Al Green onstage for a rendition of “Let’s Stay Together.”

The Oscar winner — dressed in a white turtle neck and black jacket — took the stage to sing a few notes from the classic, 1971 song. “‘Cause you make me feel so brand new,” sang Green, before Freeman joined in: “Let me say that since, baby, since we’ve been together/Ooh, loving you forever.”

The crowd erupted in applause as they witnessed the sweet moment as Green continued the performance of the track. “Let’s Stay Together” served as the lead single of Green’s album of the same name, and reached Number One on the Billboard Hot 100.

CNN had reporter Oscar Jimenez at the bar to celebrate the new year. Jimenez interviewed Freeman earlier in the night as Freeman shared why he decided to open the blues bar in 2001.

Freeman said he was working on a new restaurant in the town, but met a couple who were “looking for someplace to hear some blues,” so he and his business partner decided to open a club that played the genre. “So the decision was made right then. We got to have a blues club here. We got to do something,” he said. “So, let’s build this.”

Freeman later shared some photos from the evening on X, posting a photo of himself onstage with Green. “We ushered in the New Year with Al Green and Kingfish at Ground Zero last night. Happy New Year, everyone!” Freeman wrote.

Freeman is set to star on the third Now You See Me film, expected to be released later this year. He also starred on Paramount+’s Special Ops: Lioness late 2024.
