When Heidi Montag‘s debut album Superficial was released 15 years ago, the reception was lukewarm at best. The album reportedly sold less than 1,000 copies within its first week, with a collective download count of 6,000 across its 12-song track list. At the time, the Hills star claimed she spent $2 million recording the project, but was adamant that “the songs will make an impact in pop history.” It took a while, but Superficial is now the Number One songs on the all-genre iTunes albums chart.
The spike in downloads comes after Montag and her husband, Spencer Pratt, lost their home during the raging L.A. fires last week. “Thank you for the overwhelming love and support of my music and really rallying behind us in this devastating time and making it such a blessing,” Montag shared in a recent TikTok. “Thank you for helping support us, helping build us back up, helping to encourage us, give us that hope and faith and excitement in such a dark, dark time.”
After evacuating with their two children, Montag and Pratt shared footage from home security cameras showing their home going up in flames. “The one positive sign i saw as our house burned down was ours sons bed burned in the shape of a heart,” Pratt said at the time. “A sign of how much love was in this house so thankful for all the years and memories there with our family.”
Pratt was a leading voice in the push to purchase Superficial, the title track for which is currently Number One on the iTunes songs chart. It tops releases from Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars, and more. Even “Higher” has made its way up to Number Two on the music videos chart, sitting behind the trailer for Mac Miller’s Balloonerism.
Montag earns more revenue from fans buying the album and songs, as opposed to streaming them. Other celebrities, including Flavor Flav and Emily Ratajkowski, have posted videos boosting “I’ll Do It.” The single is currently at Number Five on the songs chart.
“The only thing that’s really keeping me going and feeling so much hope and positivity and like something good is going to come out of the worst thing that ever happened in the history of my life on earth, is everyone here on this app,” Pratt shared.
