Samia Previews New Album ‘Bloodless’ With ‘Bovine Excision’ Video

Singer-songwriter’s third LP, Bloodless, arrives in April

Samia has officially released “Bovine Excision,” a fan favorite that doubles as the prettiest song about cattle mutilation.

“Diet Dr. Pepper, Raymond Carver,” professes the singer-songwriter, who is seen in the video below reading in the bathtub, painting her nails, and strolling with “rice wine lime-flavored Lays.” It’s an acoustic ticking time bomb, a stunning build of instrumentation that’s both turbulent and controlled, as she sings “and drained, drained bloodless” over and over.

Samia started performing “Bovine Excision” last summer, fascinated by the bizarre, bloodless killing of livestock. “I was drawn to the phenomenon of bloodless cattle mutilation as a metaphor for self-extraction,” she said in a statement. “This clinical pursuit of emptiness.”

“Bovine Excision” is the lead single off Bloodless, Samia’s new album out April 25 via Grand Jury. It marks her third record, following 2023’s Honey, and was recorded in North Carolina and Minneapolis. It was co-produced by Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen, and features Christian Lee Hutson and Raffaela.

In addition to bovine excisions, Samia was inspired by other unsolved mysteries, such as God and “the impossibility of femininity” while making the record. “I’ve spent the past two decades unintentionally conflating an abstract idea of men with my understanding of God,” she said. “The person I became in order to impress this imagined figure is inseparable from who I am today. A significant part of my personality was built around traits and behaviors I believed — whether through observation or hearsay — men would like. With this album, I’ve tried to confront that head-on.”
