Björk first performed her Cornucopia tour in New York in May 2019
Björk will preview her upcoming concert movie Cornucopia this Friday. She began her trek in May 2019 in New York, which paused for two years due to the pandemic before restarting in 2023. By the year’s end, she performed 45 visual concerts across four continents.
The “Venus as a Boy” singer said she spent the last decade working with 360 degree sound and visual software, animation, and virtual reality tools to create an immersive sonic experience for VR albums Biophilia and Vulnicura. Björk described her latest concert tour Cornucopia as a VR experience for in-person audiences. During the show, visuals were projected on 27 moving curtains, creating a digitally animated experience. Björk’s performance also incorporated instruments like a magnetic harp, an aluphone (a percussion instrument made of aluminum bells), a circular flute, and a custom reverb chamber.
Apple Music will release a one-hour excerpt of the film on Friday. Björk promised a theatrical release for the full concert movie, but has yet to announce a release date. The singer collaborated with musical director and multi-instrumentalist Bergur þórisson, percussionist Manu Delago, flute septet Viibra, harpist Katie Buckley, and the Hamrahlid Choir.
“My intention was to bring what we had created for 21st-century VR into a 19th-century theatre – taking it from the headset to the stage,” Björk wrote in a social media post on Wednesday.
The Icelandic artist released a book for Cornucopia in October, documenting her tour of the same name. Björk told Paper magazine that the show is “about healing,” follows a hero’s journey storyline, and leans into the project’s environmental messaging. As listeners and viewers engage with the work, she asks them to “carve intentionally into the future and demand space for hope.”
