Woman Evicts Homeless Mother-in-Law Living in Car From Driveway

A woman’s mother-in-law, as well as her brother-in-law, have been living in a car in her driveway, but they’ve overstayed their welcome.

“We had a terrible snowstorm hit here last month. I had heard from some other family members that my mother-in-law was staying in a car with my brother-in-law, her son. On Christmas Day, we told them to meet us at a nice restaurant for Christmas dinner. What I saw was pitiful—they were both skin and bones,” the woman began on Reddit.

She felt bad for her relatives and invited them to stay in their car in her driveway. However, they refused to leave.

“I told them they could hook up a big heater to their car and stay in our driveway until the storm passed. The storm has long since passed, but they are still here, and we’re cooking every meal for them, which has put us in a financial strain,” she shared.

The woman shared that her in-laws both have struggled with drug addiction, and that her mother-in-law is suffering from a decline in her mental health. In the meantime, both have trashed her driveway, causing tension between her and her neighbors.

“My brother-in-law leaves a mess in the driveway, and the neighbors have mentioned it to me. He also revs his car, which has led to more complaints from the neighbors. My mother-in-law keeps talking about a ‘big check’ she’s waiting on and has been for over a year, but I fear that money has already been spent on drugs,” she continued.

“My husband feels like they are his responsibility since his dad passed away. I told him he needed to give them tough love. I suggested giving them money for a hotel for a week (since my husband finally found a job at a restaurant) and telling them they couldn’t come back. My husband says I don’t have a big heart like he does because I’ve never been homeless, but he has,” the woman explained.

She feels they need to force them out so they can “get their lives together,” but she’s torn because she knows her “mother-in-law needs to be in a mental hospital, but she would never forgive us if we went that route.”

“We’ve tried letting my brother-in-law stay in the guest room, but he steals things and leaves the house a mess,” the woman concluded.

Users in the comments supported the woman’s decision.

“It has to be against city code to let people live in a car on your property. It is also unsanitary,” one person wrote.

“I would call 911 and have her assessed. I would also get in contact with Adult Protective Services as they can provide services to help your in-laws,” another suggested.

“Have them go to the relative who is offering them a place to stay,” another added.

“It’s been said many times but don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm. There is literally nothing you can do to help drug addicts who do not want to be helped. Save yourself,” someone else chimed in.
