If you’ve ever wondered if Arctic Monkeys‘ “I Wanna Be Yours” could possibly get even more British, look no further than singer-songwriter Lola Young‘s take on the record. Live on SiriusXM’s Alt Nation, the 24-year-old performed the classic single with the frenzied yearning found throughout her own discography, her South London accent slicing through the simple piano melody.
Young also performed her breakthrough singles “Messy” and “Conceited” from her debut album This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway. “I always believe that music is cathartic,” the musician told Rolling Stone last year. “It’s an open book, so I’m able to take bits and leave bits, and then I want to say everything, and then I want to say nothing — it’s just great to have that always in my life. It’s my only true love.”
In an interview with Junkee, Young cited Arctic Monkeys’ AM as an unconscious influence on This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway, which arrived last June. “It didn’t come intentionally. I feel like when you do that, music’s not made very well,” she said. “In my personal experience, don’t bring in a reference, just create and wait until something magic happens.”
She added: “I’m the person who’s going to be the voice of the record. I’m the person who’s going to get on stage and have to sing the songs. In my recent musical endeavors, I realized that is the core of everything I know. I don’t want to be compromising over art. It’s been a really healthy and important journey to have been on. It will only get better, I’ll only grow and understand things a little bit more.”
Young recently received a nomination for Best Pop Act at the 2025 BRIT Awards. She was previously nominated for the Rising Star award at the show in 2021. Last year, she appeared on Tyler, the Creator’s “Like Him” from his album Chromakopia.
