Patti Smith will perform her debut album Horses in full on tour to celebrate the LP’s 50 anniversary. The tour will feature feature guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, both of whom played on the original 1975 recording.
The anniversary trek will kick off on Oct. 6 at Dublin’s 3Arena, with dates in Madrid, Bergamo, Brussels, Oslo, London, and Paris. Smith will head to the U.S. the following month, with shows beginning Nov. 10 at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. The U.S. segment will also stop in Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.
Smith’s band will include Kaye and Daugherty, as well as keyboardist/bassist Tony Shanahan, who has toured with her for thirty years, and guitarist Jackson Smith. A press release notes, “Please join us to help celebrate the final ride of our irreverent thoroughbred.”
The upcoming tour marks 20 years since Smith performed Horses live in its entirety for the first time. She initially revisited the album in 2005 for its 30th anniversary during Meltdown Festival in London, which she was invited to curate that year.
Smith’s 50th anniversary concerts are in addition to the previously-announced Patti Smith tribute concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall on March 26. Dubbed “People Have the Power: Celebrating the Music of Patti Smith,” the concert will feature Michael Stipe, Kim Gordon, Matt Berninger of the National, Karen O, Sharon Van Etten, Ben Harper, Courtney Barnett, the Kronos Quartet, Angel Olsen, the Kills’ Alison Mosshart, and more.
Horses was produced by the Velvet Underground’s John Cale and has since become a highly-decorated album. It was included by the Library of Congress in the National Recording Registry, and inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2021. Rolling Stone called the album “wonderful in large measure because it recognizes the over-whelming importance of words in her work.”
“To say that any of these songs is ‘about’ anything in particular is silly — it limits them in a way that hopelessly confines their evocativeness,” Rolling Stone wrote in its review. “Like all real poets, Smith offers visions that embrace a multiplicity of meanings, all of them valid if they touch an emotional chord…. She leaps between meanings of words like an elf across dimensions, deliberately dizzying you with criss-crossings between comfortable perceptions: you see, the see becomes a sea, the sea a sea of possibilities.”
Tickets for the tour go on sale on Friday Feb. 14. A pre-sale begins Feb. 12.
