Kacey Musgraves premiered an ode to her best friend during her performance at the new Nashville venue, The Pinnacle. “She’s My Bitch” arrived in the middle of the set in celebration of the country musician’s Australian cattle dog, who is “so spicy, her name is Pepper.”
“She’s black and white, all ride or die/More bark than bite/She’s my bitch,” Musgraves sang. “The star of the pack, no one’s talking smack/Yeah, she’s got my back/She’s my bitch … Who would’ve known when I took her home/That I’d fall so in love/Yeah, I’m her bitch.”
Last year, Musgraves shared a series of Instagram Story posts recounting a run-in that Pepper had with a copperhead snake. The musician said that the dog “saved her” from stepping on the snake, which has a venomous bite that can be lethal to humans, on her back porch. After stepping in, Pepper ended up at the vet for treatment but made it out just fine.
The rest of the performance, the first at the newly-opened venue, featured selections from across Musgraves’ discography. She followed the new song with “Merry Go ‘Round,” “The Architect,” and “Jade Green” before closing out the set with a run of favorites: “Rainbow,” “Slow Burn,” “Space Cowboy,” “High Horse,” “Deeper Well,” and more. She also performed “Easier Said” in its entirety for the first time.
The show marked Musgraves’ first since wrapping the Deeper Well tour in December. “Sometimes, you reach a crossroads. Winds change direction. What you once felt drawn to doesn’t hold the same allure,” she said about the album last year. “You get blown off course but eventually find your footing and forage for new inspiration, new insight, and deeper love somewhere else.”
Deeper Well followed her 2021 album, Star-Crossed, which featured songs such as “Camera Roll,” “Hookup Scene,” and “Breadwinner.”
