I was recently gifted some time with country music royalty — Luke Bryan — and I tasked him with a pretty tough question.
I asked him: If you could form a country music trio, which other artists would you ask to join your group?
I knew Bryan would be the best person to answer this, as he is a judge on American Idol and has a good ear for vocalists. He can also see strengths in artists and knows how those strengths might play out onstage.
The “Most People Are Good” singer heard the question, sighed a little, ran his hand through his hair, and admitted it would be hard to answer.
“Oh gosh, that’s probably gotta be … that’s tough!”
“Trio — me, and certainly Jason Aldean,” he said, adding: “And probably Dierks [Bentley], I like that.”
Could you imagine? It’d be a modern-day version of The Highwaymen! But instead of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, this would be Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean and Dierks Bentley.
There is no way that group wouldn’t sell out stadiums all across America.
Logistically, it might be tough to get all three of those guys in the same room to play shows day after day. Financially, it would not make too much sense as a concert promoter to book them, as it would likely cost millions in talent fees.
This mythical country music supergroup that Bryan formed on the spot sure would be fun, wouldn’t it? But they’d give Old Dominion — who have won Vocal Group of the Year at the CMA Awards for seven years straight — a run for their money.
