‘1923’ S2, E5 Delivers a Shootout + a Trip to the Train Station

1923‘s Season 2, Episode 5 debuted on Sunday (March 23), and the episode brought trouble for a beloved character, new hope for a struggling family and a shootout that may have left another character dead.

What Happens to Teonna Rainwater in 1923 Season 2, Episode 5?

1923‘s Season 2, Episode 5 is titled “Only Gunshots to Guide Us,” and it opens with Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) in the city, where they are questioning some of the men who recently rounded up some cattle with Teonna (Aminah Nieves), her father Runs His Horse (Michael Spears) and Pete (Jeremy Guana).

That puts them onto their trail, and as the episode progresses, we see Pete separate from the others to look for water for their starving horses.

He does end up finding water — but unfortunately, he also finds Father Renaud and Marshal Kent, who give chase. Pete’s exhausted horse falters and he falls, and as the episode ends, we see Pete brandishing a rifle and exchanging gunfire with Marshal Kent, but we don’t see who prevails in the shootout.

What Happens to Alexandra in Season 2, Episode 5 of 1923?

Alexandra barely made her train in last week’s episode after getting robbed, and as this episode begins, we see that she does not even have money left to pay for meals, which were not included in the price of her ticket.

She ends up taking a job as a waitress in the dining car in exchange for tips and meals, in another difficult contrast to her life of luxury in England.

The situation turns worse from there.

• A customer sexually gropes her, and she retaliates by pouring hot coffee in his lap and striking him repeatedly with the coffee pot.
• She’s taken into custody on board, but Chicago police decline to charge her after a couple who witnessed the incident share her side.
• Her next train is canceled indefinitely due to snow, and with nowhere else to go, Alexandra accepts the couple’s invitation to stay with them for a while.

What Happens to Spencer on 1923 Season 2, Episode 5?

Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) wakes up to find Marshal Fossett (Jennifer Carpenter) and her men standing over him, and they take him into Amarillo, where she calls Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick) in Montana to verify Spencer’s story.

He warns Spencer not to come back and start a war, but Spencer says the war has already started and the sheriff has done nothing to the men who killed his brother.

The last we see of Spencer in Episode 5, he is boarding a train of his own, presumably finally headed back to Montana. And we see Sheriff McDowell headed out to tell Cara (Helen Mirren) that her nephew is back in the States and on his way home, marking the second episode in a row to give the embattled Dutton clan new hope.

What Happens to Banner Creighton and Donald Whitfield in 1923 Season 2, Episode 5?

In the latest episode, we see Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) has made his way to the spot on the map where there are no laws, perfect for hiding the body of the sex worker who died at Whitfield’s house — and anyone else who Banner has to kill in service to his merciless boss.

The new spot is obviously what will become the train station later on in Yellowstone — which makes us wonder, how do the Duttons find out about the spot, and who will be the first person they take out there and dump?

Meanwhile, Whitfield’s other remaining girl — who has become as cruel as he is under his tutelage — goes into the city to find another girl to bring home as their unwilling plaything, and we wonder if we’ll be seeing another body headed for the train station in the coming weeks.

The episode ends with the shootout between Pete and Marshal Kent, and as always, there are more questions than answers as we wait for next week’s episode.

Will Spencer and Alexandra ever finally make it to Montana — and if they do, will there be anything left of the Duttons’ ranch or their way of life to defend?

Will Creighton continue to serve Whitfield with loyalty despite his many misgivings, or will he eventually turn on him? How will his loyalty end up impacting his family?

Did Pete survive his shootout with the marshal? Will the marshal and Father Renaud finally catch up to Teonna, and what will happen if they do?

Will Whitfield wind up wresting control of the Duttons’ land for his resort and his mine? Or will he, himself, end up with a visit to the train station when it’s all said and done?
