“I just wanted to be free, but I didn’t think it would actually happen,” she says in a Call Her Daddy episode
A young Chappell Roan could have never imagined the unabashed star she’d become as an adult. In a Rolling Stone exclusive clip of her Call Her Daddy interview, out Tuesday, the pop artist reflected on how “restricted” she felt in her youth and why her younger self would not be able to believe who she is now.
“I don’t even know if my young self would be able to register that as a part of me. That’s how removed… I was so, so, so opposite of me now,” Roan told host Alex Cooper. “It just wasn’t awaken.”
“Young Kayleigh just felt so restricted because I was a problem child and so angry and so depressed and I felt like no one understood me,” Roan continued. “Now, that part of me is so alive … I just wanted to be free, but I didn’t think it would actually happen. Now that it has, it’s like she wouldn’t believe it at all. I don’t think she’d believe that this is what I do.”
Roan has been candid about the transformation she went through as she learned to accept her sexuality and who she was. The singer opened up to Rolling Stone in a 2024 cover story about learning to deal with shame around her sexuality. “It took a lot of unlearning, and there’s still things I’m still confused about, and [it’s] why I feel so uncomfortable being gay sometimes,” she said at the time. “I don’t get why this is such an issue for me. It shouldn’t be, but something’s just going on and I need to just accept that.”
The new interview with Call Her Daddy comes over a week after she released her sapphic country banger, “The Giver,” months after performing it on Saturday Night Live months before.
