Duffy Makes First Appearance Since Revealing She Was Kidnapped, Raped

Singer has been notably out of the public eye since revealing in an Instagram post that she had been raped and kidnapped

Duffy has returned to the spotlight. On Thursday, five years after revealing she had been abducted and sexually abused, the Welsh singer appeared on TikTok to promote a new remix of her hit, “Mercy.”

In the video, the singer is captured lip-synching to her 2008 hit before winking at the camera.

The TikTok was posted by group E.motion with the caption: “Some of you asked if Duffy was really doing a UK Garage remix with us.” The group had been promoting the remix of “Mercy” on their social media.

“You got me begging you for mercy,” Duffy sings on the track. “Why won’t you release me?”

The appearance comes five years after the singer revealed that she was “raped and drugged and held captive over some days” in an Instagram post that marked one of her first public statements in a long time. She said at the time that the abduction incident caused her to retreat from the spotlight.

“You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this,” Duffy said at the time. “The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it.”

Duffy released her widely successful and Grammy-winning debut, Rockferry, in 2008, though her 2010 follow-up, Endlessly, failed to have a similar impact. In 2011, Duffy announced she would be taking a hiatus from music, and returned only in 2015 to release a handful of songs for the soundtrack to Tom Hardy’s 2015 movie Legend. She has not released music since.
