I’m ‘Never Letting’ Her Out of Basement

It’s been 10 years since Poot — the spurious sister of Demi — came into the internet ether. Fans have been clamoring for her return

Free our internet bestie, Poot. She didn’t do anything! On Monday night, Demi Lovato joked about never allowing her photoshopped Poot out of her basement in a silly TikTok a decade after the world was first introduced to her fictitious twin.

“When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…” Lovato wrote over a post of a lip-sync of her saying the words in a monotone voice, “What an offer, let me sleep on it though.” In the caption, Lovato made it clear she was going to keep Poot hidden from the public for the rest of eternity: “And I’m never letting her out.”

In the post’s comment, many fans requested that Poot Lovato be freed from the trenches of the singer’s basement. Even the phone case brand Casetify requested for her release. One fan even wrote, “poot’s been busy making that album huh.”

Trending Stories

It’s been 10 years since the world met Poot, the meme character that emerged from a photoshopped, unflattering picture of Demi Lovato during a 2014 event. The photo shows an altered version of Lovato’s face with what appears to be a buzz cut. Fans joked at the time that it was Lovato’s twin sister, and Lovato clarified, “She was locked in a basement her whole life… This picture was taken the first time she went outside. Her name is Poot.”

When Poot Lovato first popped up, Lovato wasn’t as in on the joke, writing on Twitter, “cool to see a shitty angle turn into a meme that circulates the internet to people’s amusement.” But now, she’s into it. When asked by a fan where she was in 2018, Lovato replied, “Poot is locked up. She’s allergic to sunlight.”
