Katy Perry‘s upcoming concerts in Guadalajara, Mexico, have been canceled. The shows, set for May 1 and 2, aren’t able to take place because the construction of the new Arena Guadalajara won’t be done in time.
Perry shared the news in an Instagram Story, writing, “Sadly, I learned that the construction of Arena Guadalajara will not be complete for their scheduled shows next week, which includes mine on May 1 and 2.”
She continued, “Last week I sent my team to the Arena to make sure there wasn’t anything we could do to make this happen but it was evident when they arrived that the venue was not ready or safe to receive my show or an audience. I wish I could fix this but it is beyond my control. You guys mean the world to me and we have all been on such a beautiful journey together that I will be thinking about how I can create something special for the fans in Guadalajara in the future.”
Arena Guadalajara also axed upcoming shows by Carlos Rivera and Intocable. In a statement, the venue noted that “the cancelation of the concerts is beyond the control of the artists.” Tickets for all shows will be refunded.
Perry will kick off her Lifetimes Tour tomorrow in Mexico City. The global trek runs though Aug. 22, with stops around North America. She’ll then conclude the Lifetimes run by visiting South America and Europe. The tour marks the singer’s first time on the road in seven years.
“We’re giving BPM. We’re giving celebration. We’re giving unity. We’re giving dance,” Perry told Rolling Stone. “It will be like Disneyland on Wheels, as it always is. A feast for the eyes and the ears.”
She also teased that she’ll play her “whole life” of hits thus far, while sprinkling in songs from last year’s 143 and 2020’s Smile, which didn’t get a tour after she welcomed her daughter Daisy that year.
“I always remember the audience is a hybrid of different types of people: It’s number one fans, and then it’s voyeurs. It’s people that only know me for one song, and then people that know ‘Simple,’” Perry says, referring to her 2005 deep cut featured on The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. “It’s such a smorgasbord. I have a responsibility to the audience to give them that singalong, to create that moment, and to bring out some nostalgia.”
Perry recently made headlines (good and bad) for being part of the all-female space flight on Blue Origin’s New Shepard. Perry was joined onboard by fellow voyagers Gayle King, activist Amanda Nguyen, movie producer Kerianne Flynn, and entertainment reporter (and Bezos’ fiancée) Lauren Sánchez. Aisha Bowe, a former NASA aerospace engineer, was also on the flight, which marks Blue Origin’s 31st overall flight and 11th suborbital flight with humans aboard.
