A Pennsylvania man knew his 8-year-old Great Dane, Iris, didn’t have much time left, and he wanted to make her last day special.
So, the dog owner, Hunter Metzger, put in a seemingly normal order at his local Texas Roadhouse location: A rare 8 oz. New York Strip steak, steak fries, mashed potatoes (with butter) and some fresh baked bread, local affiliate KENS5 reports.
But Metzger put a little note at the bottom of his order, indicating that the meal was the last meal for his dog. The Texas Roadhouse workers who took the order knew this meant it should be handled with a lot of care and even more love — but they did more than that.
The staff didn’t charge him for the food, and they wrote in marker on the to-go box that it had been prepared with love. They also sent their condolences.
“We laid our sweet pup to rest last night, and for her last meal we got her a steak dinner from Texas Roadhouse,” Metzger writes in a post on Facebook, explaining the experience he had at the restaurant. “Not only did the restaurant not let me pay for the meal, but the wonderful employees also took the time to write a note on the top of the container and a message on the back of the receipt.”
Also on the social media site, Metzger shared photos of Iris, who appeared to be smiling as she waited for her plate, which included a generous helping of the steak and even some of Texas Roadhouse’s famous cinnamon butter on the bread.
It’s not clear if she was suffering from an illness. On average, Great Danes only live 8-10 years, and she was 8-and-a-half.
Talking to the local news outlet, Iris’ owner says that she was “loved by everyone that met her” and a “gentle giant.”
“We’ll miss her infamous lean, her deep bark, her affectionate nuzzles, her velvety soft ears, and her snoring.”
