“Can you believe credit history? It’s credit. It’s history”
Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney reimagined Phish as Seinfeld — or “Seinfeld, but it’s Phish,” as the host said — on the latest episode of Netflix’s late-night show.
With Phish in Los Angeles for their three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl, the Rock Hall-snubbed jam band put on wigs and stepped into a rundown version of Jerry Seinfeld’s “show about nothing” apartment for a bizarre three-minute sketch where Trey Anastasio portrayed Jerry, bassist Mike Gordon played George Costanza, keyboardist Page McConnell channeled Kramer, and drummer Jon Fishman played Elaine Benes.
“Can you believe credit history?” Trey/Jerry asked Mike/George. “It’s credit. It’s history.”
However, the bit soon devolves into a sketch about nothing, a blooper reel where the quartet’s acting miscues are edited together as they try and fail to film the scene together. The sketch ends with the four members breaking the fourth wall, gazing at the camera as their Seinfeld characters.
Also on Everybody’s Live, Mulaney pondered whether he could successfully fight three 14-year-old boys, a question he’s hoping to answer on the show’s season finale next week. This episode’s guests included Marc Maron, Ronny Chieng, and Molly Shannon, as well as a musical performance by Maggie Rogers with John Cale.
As for Phish, despite winning the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame fan vote this year, the Vermont jam legends did not make the Class of 2025, leaving us to ask, “WTF?” The group wrapped up their spring tour earlier this week with the Hollywood Bowl gigs, and will next begin a summer trek in June.
