RBD‘s Christian Chavez is baring it all. On Thursday, the Mexican pop star announced that he’ll release his solo EP, Sí, on May 6. In a handwritten note, he said the project is a “manifesto” of how he’s leading his life, years after being outed while a member of pop group RBD.
“I covered my pain with laughter, living behind a mask. The race to chase the fortune of my dreams coming true pushed me to forget my essence,” he wrote in his note. “Romantic love only brought more destruction. I gave my power to someone else, and then they took away my voice by exposing my sexual preference, And having to carry it like a scarlet letter in front of the whole world.”
Chavez, who released “Mañana Me Voy” last week, opened up about “feeling different” since he was a child and how he felt like he needed to reject his instincts to please others as he pursued a career as a telenovela actor and musician.
“I got caught in self-destruction. I went from one relapse to another. My soul needed a painful revolution to heal,” Chavez wrote. “This EP is more than songs and images — It’s a manifesto about me and my new life. I became my own fucking hero.”
In the post’s comments, bandmate Maite Perroni shared a sweet supportive message to Chavez for his bravery in the note. “I love you with all my heart, and I admire you more than words can express,” she wrote. “You are my teacher and I honor and applaud every inch of you, of your existence, of your authenticity and ability to rebuild with and self-love. Forever and always with you, beautiful soul!!!”
The musician’s solo music comes more than a year after RBD reunited for a sold-out Soy Rebelde stadium tour across the United States and Latin America. At the start of the run, the singer reflected on sharing his queerness so publicly onstage. “I’m not going to stay quiet. I’m not going to change who I am,” he told Rolling Stone at the time. “The old Christian is gone and he won’t come back.”
Back in October, the band settled a lawsuit with their ex-manager after their the band’s lawyers sued Rosas following “significant irregularities” in the band’s finances, including $1 million that were unaccounted for. (T6H denied claims of wrongdoing in a statement to Rolling Stone.)
Chavez’s bandmate Dulce María re-launched her solo career last November with a Beret collab, “Ojalá.” She told Rolling Stone. “I want people to feel, connect with, and dance to these songs. This has been such a therapy and catharsis for me.”
