While some Met Gala attendees came under fire for what were perceived to be historically insensitive fashion choices and others were targeted for wearing lackluster outfits, rap star Doechii was met with mean girl accusations. In a viral video, an annoyed Doechii could be heard demanding more umbrellas from her team to conceal her outfit as she made her way to the fashion event.
A post from Pop Crave sharing the video — with the caption “Doechii is being accused of “mistreating” her assistants during the Met Gala” — has racked up 109,000 likes. “Doechii was cussing everybody out over a mediocre outfit but we’re the ones overreacting for thinking she was being disrespectful,” another X user shared in response as debates formed around whether or not the musician was excessively rude.
Doechii, who wore custom Louis Vuitton to the Met Gala, isn’t taking it to heart. “God forbid a girl needs more umbrellas,” she wrote over an Instagram Story in which she theatrically throws her hands up in surrender while backing away from the camera. She followed the post with an actual response shortly after. “All jokes aside I’m so so so proud of my glam deal and the LV team for an incredible night,” she said.
“We’ve been dreaming about this Met for a long time and the theme this year is in such alignment with who I am what I stand for. It’s nothing but God that this year was our debut. Everyone killed it. We nailed the theme. And a time was had,” she continued, punctuating the note with a purple umbrella emoji. It’s worth noting that earlier this year, Doechii was also the target of excessive online hate rooted in misconceptions, misogyny, and prejudice.
This year’s Met Gala theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” inspired by the 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity by Monica Miller, who curated the accompanying Costume Institute exhibit. Pharrell Williams, Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director, served as co-chair alongside Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, and Lewis Hamilton.
