Maren Morris admits she was “nervous” before her first date with a woman.
The 35-year-old singer — who has 5-year-old son Hayes with ex-husband Ryan Hurd — came out as bisexual last year. She’s opening up about how apprehensive she felt when she first tried to make a romantic connection with another woman, but was relieved to have a great time.
“I had never been on a date with a woman. So, of course, I’m going to be like, ‘What the hell does this is look like?’ But then it was so easy and ended up being like a three-hour hang,” Morris says on the U Up? podcast.
The “Girl” singer has discovered she finds it much easier to make a deep connection with another woman than with a man.
“My experience has been really positive,” she says, “But I also have a confusion sometimes because I can connect with a woman, any woman, within like two minutes, and we’ll be talking about our childhoods … Like, we will get into it so quickly. With a guy that would take like years to get into that trauma.”
“But we’re so good at building community out of sharing stories or gossip or whatever … It’s a survival technique. We cling together out of vulnerabilities.”
But bonding with women on an “emotionally deep level” has led to some confusion where Morris has found it difficult to establish if there is a romantic spark or not.
“I sometimes have the hard delineation of romance versus friendship, because women can connect so quickly and easily, which is a magical thing about us,” she explains.

“But that’s the comparison, I guess, to dating men, right? Because I’ve been there. It’s like, I have enough friends. I think I’m good. I’m looking for something beyond that. But sometimes the chemistry isn’t there. It doesn’t depend, you know, on the guy or the girl.”
Morris says she has a straightforward co-parenting relationship with Hurd, particularly as they only live five minutes away from one another.
Speaking to The Zoe Report, she said: “Our stops are really easy, and we’ll have family dinners.”
Hayes spends alternate weeks with each parent, meaning Morris has had to adjust to spending time on her own.
“Those weeks I have him, the house is full of chaos and energy and laughter and scraped knees,” she says. “And then, when he is not there, you have to recalibrate your alone-ness because you’re like, ‘Wow, this is just me in here now.’ That’s when I’ve leaned into it and not been drowned by my own company.”
