See a clip from It’s All Gonna Break, a new film about the group that will hit theaters in the months ahead
Broken Social Scene always seemed like more of a collective than a band, and a new clip from It’s All Gonna Break — an upcoming doc about the group that’s hitting movie theaters around North America in the months to come — shows the hard work the musicians had to put into getting on the road.
First off, they needed a female singer that could replicate vocals recorded by Leslie Feist, Metric’s Emily Haines, and Stars’ Amy Millan, so they hired vocalist-keyboardist Lisa Lobsinger to tour with them. (She’d also record with them later.) But before Lobsinger came aboard, they had to ask concert promoters to find female singers for them in every town they played. In the clip, band members discuss how they did that in Singapore, Mexico City, and elsewhere. It also shows how they discussed the songs with the singers.
The film features never-before-seen footage that their friend, filmmaker Stephen Chung, had captured over the years. It features new interviews with the group’s Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, as well as Feist, Millan, and Haines, as well as appearances from literally every member of the band throughout the years.
The movie has been long in the making. Chung delivered a first cut of the film to the band in 2007, but its members didn’t want it to come out then. When they came around to the idea, Chung conducted fresh interviews with the musicians to show how they had “grown up” since then. The picture got its premiere last year at the Woodstock Film Festival.
