Mariah Carey’s next album is finished and yes, there will be some classic Carey ballads on the track list.
The singer revealed the news at an event with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden celebrating the 10th anniversary of Apple Music. Near the end of the chat, Lowe asked Carey what she planned to do next, following the release of her recent single, “Type Dangerous.”
“Well, it’s the album coming out,” Carey said with some caution. “I don’t want to tell too much about it, because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing, you know?”
Lowe and Darden did get Carey to confirm a few details, such as: The album is finished and it contains 11, or maybe 12, songs (Carey couldn’t remember the exact number). When Darden asked if fans could expect “the big Mariah ballads,” she replied, “We are. Yes. We got some Mariah ballads.”
Carey also said the album’s next single would be coming soon, saying, “I’m very excited about it. It’s very summery. I like the beat, as well.”
It’s been seven years since Carey released her last album, 2018’s Caution. Since then, Carey hasn’t released too much new solo music, though she has dropped new anniversary issues of several classic albums (including The Emancipation of Mimi, Music Box, Butterfly, and Rainbow), the 2020 compilation The Rarities, and plenty of Christmas music. She’s also guested on remixes of songs by Ariana Grande and Latto.
Carey released “Type Dangerous” in early June, quickly following the track with a music video that featured appearances from Marlon Lundgren Garcia and MrBeast. The singer has been teasing MC16 as well, though neither a release date, nor a title have been announced yet.
