Mariah Carey Teases ‘MC16’ Details Coming

Mariah Carey is getting ready to reveal details about “MC16” — presumably her long-awaited follow-up album to 2018’s Caution — and the intel will arrive tomorrow, July 21. She teased the coming news on social media over the weekend.

On Sunday, the pop star posted a video montage of every one of her album covers, beginning with MC1, her eponymous debut LP, on through MC15 a.k.a. Caution, while clips of her singing a cappella served as the soundtrack. The video ends on an empty box where the presumable upcoming cover would be, with the text “MC16” appearing beneath it. Underneath the montage on social platform X, it reads “MC16 – Announcement Tomorrow.” Over in her Instagram stories, she also posted the same montage, but with a frozen countdown ticker that reads “19:06:42.”

In the interim, Carey gave a taste of things to come. On Saturday, she posted a short snippet of new song “Sugar Sweet.” In the clip, the pop star appears in a sparkly pink dress as she whips up some batter in the kitchen. As she adds ingredients, she sings the lyrics: “I’m-a keep it nice/I’m-a keep it neat/I’m-a keep it sugar/I’m-a keep it sweet.”

She confirmed that a new album was finished during a recent event with Zane Lowe and Ebro Darden celebrating the 10th anniversary of Apple Music. “Well, it’s the album coming out,” Carey said with some caution. “I don’t want to tell too much about it, because I just don’t want to reveal the whole thing, you know?”

Last month, new single “Type Dangerous” arrived, along with its video. In the week leading up to the song drop, Carey also teased MC16 on social media: In one clip, the singer is seen listening to a mysterious track called “T:D_MC16.mp3.” Her car’s license plate reads: MC16.

Earlier this month, “Type Dangerous” received a remix treatment, with versions from Busta Rhymes, Method Man, and Redman (“The Remix of the Gods”), Big Sean (“The Sean Don Remix”), DJ Snake (“The Touch the Soul of the People Remix”), and Luísa Sonza (“The Brazil Funk Remix”).
