Back in 2020, Gabby Barrett blazed onto the country music scene with “I Hope,” a debut single that was a scathing send-off to an unfaithful ex.
Now, five years later, Barrett is once again putting out a breakup song, and it’s impossible to avoid comparing this new song to her career-making debut.
On Friday (Aug. 1), the singer dropped “The Easy Part,” a clear-eyed missive to an ex who’s ending the relationship.
“Go on and slam that front door,” Barrett warns in the chorus — but she’s pretty sure he’s going to regret it.
A Callback to “I Hope”
The parallels with “I Hope” start with the credits. Barrett wrote that song with Jon Nite and Zach Kale; both of them are involved with “The Easy Part,” too (Nite is a co-writer and Kale produced the track.)
Once again, Barrett’s got karma on her side in the song’s lyrics — though this time around, her message is softer, more mature and more measured.
In “I Hope,” she spelled out a future where her ex falls in love with a cheating partner, as retribution for the way he cheated on her. In “The Easy Part,” she’s simply betting that her ex is badly misjudging how much he’ll miss her after she’s gone.

Up until now, Barrett hasn’t released a breakup song since her first hit.
Her musical output has reflected her life stages: “The Good Ones” and “Pick Me Up” are love stories, parallel to her real-life romance with and marriage to her fellow American Idol contestant husband Cade Foehner.

“Glory Days” and “Dance Like No One’s Watching” speak to her experience of motherhood, as Barrett and Foehner welcomed three children between 2021 and 2024.
And her 2024 Chapter & Verse album focused on her strong faith — a thread that Barrett has always woven into her music and public presence.
A New Chapter
A press release promises a new chapter of music ahead for the country singer, who is currently out on her Life I’m Living Tour through fall 2025.
“It captures that emotional moment when something thinks leaving is ‘The Easy Part,’ but what they don’t realize is that the memory of who you were to them will be the hardest to forget,” Barrett says of her new song.
In some ways, it feels like a distant cousin to ‘I Hope,'” she adds. “It’s a different kind of heartbreak, one that settles in slow and quiet.”
Here Are the Lyrics to Gabby Barrett’s ‘The Easy Part’:
Hey, I know that you made up your mind / You say it and you mean it this time / You’re mad and you don’t even know why
But I ain’t beggin’ you to stay / I ain’t goin’ through it again / Makin’ up and wonderin’ when / You decide how it all does and doesn’t end / So…
Chorus:
Go on and slam that front door / Go on and tell me where I can go / Put that pedal to the floorboard / Leave me a mess in the middle of the road / Go all Jack D crazy / Tell yourself leavin’ me is so hard / But I got news for you baby / That’ll be the easy part
In the middle of the night / You’ll still be reachin’ for me / And you won’t even know where I’ll be / But I’ll be with a new somebody who / Is puttin’ a ring on my finger, a smile on my face / Tells me the things that you just couldn’t say
I’ll be the one that you let get away / And you’ll find out too late…
Repeat Chorus
And the hardest part is knowin’ what we could be / Knowin’ you’ll never see / One inch of this town where I ain’t hangin’ around / Haunting every single corner of your memory
Repeat Chorus
