It’s taken me my entire life, but I have finally confirmed the exact perfume Dolly Parton wears and what you’ll smell like after you hug her.
Carrie St. Louis, who plays Parton in the new musical Dolly: A True American Musical, stopped by Taste of Country Nights to talk all things Parton, and what it’s like getting to play her while the real icon looks on.
We had a burning question that we have been dying to know for a long time: What does Dolly smell like?
St. Louis perked up and revealed:
“She smells very distinct and when you hug her, once you walk away, you will smell like her for the rest of the day.”
We had to know more.
“I will sometimes see other actors and I’ll be like, ‘Did you just hug Dolly Parton?’ and they’re like, ‘Yeah.'”
She can tell just by smelling her peers!
“She has a line of perfumes and they are her smells,” the actress explains. But as far as which one of her scents she actually wears, St. Louis says it’s, “Her Smoky Mountain Gold smell.”

“I’ve always said that there is gold up in them thar hills. When I was growing up, the mountains glowed like warm amber, and I loved the rich musky scent and how it filled the air,” Parton says of her choice perfume. “My Smoky Mountain Gold Parfum always takes me home.”
St. Louis got to spend weeks with Parton during rehearsals for the musical, so she’s gotten to know her on a more personal level.
Dolly: A True American Musical runs from now through Aug. 31 in Nashville. Then, it will travel to New York City for a stint on Broadway.
