Dolly Parton is a country legend larger than life. She’s had a colossal career, and now has put her life and legacy on display in musical form.

Dolly: An Original Musical debuted on Friday (Aug. 8), and I had the chance to attend to give you the scoop on what to expect.

Where Is the Dolly Paron Musical Airing?

Dolly: An Original Musical is hosted at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville, Tenn.

It will be hosted here until Aug. 23, before hopefully finding a permanent home on Broadway in New York City.

What Are the Highlights of Dolly Parton’s Musical?

It’s a two-hour-and forty-five-minute show, including the intermission, but it flies by.

Before the show or during intermission, there are plenty of things to keep you busy in the lobby.

With a hefty gift shop with all things Dolly, you can partake in purchasing many of the singer’s entrepreneurial outlets. There is her wine line, baking goods, jewelry collaboration with designer Kendra Scott, and so much more.

There, you can also see many of her costumes throughout her years, all on display behind glass boxes.

Will I See Dolly Parton Herself?

While Dolly Parton has surprised fans by showing up to a performance or two, she is not in the musical itself.

There are three actors who play and portray the singer’s life. You have “Little Dolly” played by Quinn Titcomb, “Dolly” played by Carrie St. Louis, and “Dolly Parton” played by Katie Rose Clarke.

The food selection is pretty normal to any musical show spread, but you’ll find Parton’s wine line as an option for a treat. It’s a little pricey, but what you’d expect for a professional performance venue.

Are There Any Surprises in the Dolly Parton Musical?

My two favorite surprises were learning more about Parton’s late husband Carl, and her best friend, Judy.

Carrie St. Louis, who plays Dolly, told us in an interview that we were going to get to know who Carl was, more than the singer has shared before. She was right! I left with such a fondness for Carl and the couple’s relationship.

The musical briefly touches on their meeting and enduring marriage, emphasizing the stability and support he provided behind the scenes.

His low-profile nature is respected, so the show keeps details about their relationship minimal. However, what we are privy to is satisfying.

Then comes her best friend, Judy Ogle. I think I’ve been living under a rock, because I really didn’t know much about Judy before the show.

In the musical, Judy Ogle is portrayed as a constant source of loyalty and companionship.

The story shows how Judy has been by Dolly’s side through career highs and personal challenges, often traveling with her and working behind the scenes. Their bond is depicted as sister-like, built on decades of trust, humor, and shared experiences.

While the show doesn’t dwell deeply on Judy’s personal life, it highlights her unwavering presence in Dolly’s world.

It was so well done, and I learned many things about the singer’s life that I didn’t know before. There was such beautiful storytelling, and I left with even more admiration for the singer and the ups and downs, grit and determination she’s had to get to where she is today.

For me, my favorite part was the ending number.

I won’t go into detail as I don’t want to spoil it for you, but let’s just say I had tears welling up in my eyes, and the lady sitting behind me was full-on crying.

Such a wonderful musical!
