Walmart Quietly Settles 3rd Lawsuit for Same Accusation

Walmart has quietly settled a third lawsuit for the same accusation: False pricing and incorrect product weighting.

Supermarket News reports that Walmart just paid a $5.6 million settlement for a consumer protection lawsuit.

It happened in California, across the state’s 280 Walmart locations. The 2022 lawsuit claimed that Walmart was overcharging customers for items — more than what was on the price tag.

Additionally, the lawsuit claimed they were putting a heavier weight on items they process in store, like pre-sliced fruits, bakery items, etc.

“When someone brings an item to the register to be scanned, the price must be right. They expect it. California expects it. My office expects it, and we will apply the law to make sure of it,” Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen said.

Walmart does not admit any guilt with the settlement, they are just happy the issue is resolved.

But the retail giant was dinged for this same exact thing two other times just last year: They settled a lawsuit which alleged the same thing was going on at 64 of their New Jersey locations. That settlement cost Walmart $1.6 million.

That pales in comparison to the class action lawsuit that was filed earlier in 2024, in which Walmart had to pay $45 million to settle a nationally-scaled lawsuit, accusing the chain of inflating produce weight, mislabeling the weight of bagged produce and overcharging for clearance items.
