Gavin Adcock labeled Charley Crockett a “cosplay cowboy,” and the internet responded with an overwhelming, “Naw bro, that ain’t it.”
Actually, the response to Adcock’s post on his X (formerly Twitter) page was a bit more inflammatory.
“I mean he superior objectively, this just comes of as insecure buddy,” says @OTLoser.
That’s an example of the kind of response we can share without an NSFW warning. People weren’t afraid to use all the four and five-letter words in responding to the Athens, Ga., native.
- In June, Gavin Adcock criticized Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album, which — at the time — was one spot above his yet-to-be-released Own Worst Enemy album on Apple Music’s Country Albums chart.
- On Tuesday (Aug. 19), Crockett took to Instagram to point out the hypocrisy of the wider argument that Beyoncé and her album should not be labeled “country.” He never mentions Adcock but does seem to point to him.
- Both men have released new albums this month. Crockett dropped his 16th studio album, Dollar a Day, on Aug. 8. Adcock released Own Worst Enemy (his third studio album) on Aug. 15.

“Why does what he said make you so angry? It’s giving racism and misogyny tbh,” adds @dyanasaurusrex.
“And Charley Crockett has more talent in his pinky then you have seen in ur whole f—in life,” says @brokenciggies.
“Keep crying you triggered little b—hflake,” suggests @TheAlSmithee
What Did Gavin Adcock Say About Charley Crockett?
Before getting to Adock’s response, it’s helpful to read what Crocket said on Instagram.
His key points are that 25 years of bro country has done more to trigger a harsh defense of traditional country music than Beyoncé.
Also, he points out that many of today’s most popular country artists listen to hip-hop as much as (or more than) country music.
Without naming him — and with no derision — the Texan describes Morgan Wallen, whose management company Adock signed with this summer.
Crockett then goes on share his experience with working with major players in Music City. The last few sentences call out an outlaw country imitator.
“I have a problem with being compartmentalized by the music business. Outlaw as a *sub genre* of country was artists standing up for their rights against a rigid system. Ain’t no reason to imitate @officialwaylon and @willienelsonofficial if you ain’t about the fight,” he says.
Adcock’s response came about eight hours later, and he suggested Crockett needs to focus on creating more original music.
“I got more cows–t under my pinky then you have seen your whole f—in’ life,” he typed. “Hank Sr called and asked about the cosplay cowboy.”
On Instagram Story, Adcock highlighted the post on X and made a joke about Crockett’s appearance.
While he doesn’t have as many followers on X (6,600) as he does on Instagram (674K), there was plenty of response on the platform. As of 9:30AM CT there were over 100 responses, and the majority disagreed with Adcock.
“Look in the mirror when you’re calling people cosplay cowboys, sir,” says @minnesotamitch.
Others argued that Adcock is missing the whole point of Crockett’s appearance.

“Charley Crockett never claimed to be a cowboy. What do you think the whole $10 cowboy (his 2024 album) bit is about,” adds @GSB_RedZone.
It gets pretty ugly and personal after that. In total, there were about six responses in support of Adcock’s post.

Who Is Gavin Adcock?
Gavin Adcock is a country music newcomer signed to Warner Nashville. He grew up on a cattle farm and played football prior to learning how to write songs and play guitar. Two events kick-started a change of career plans.
The first was a knee injury suffered at Georgia Southern University. At age 22 he picked up the guitar and began to learn songs by Keith Whitley, George Strait and Hank Williams. Soon after he began to perform.
In October 2021, Adock was kicked off the football team at GSU after a video showing him chugging a beer on top of a moving school bus went viral. The incident happened just before a football game that Adock — a nose tackle — played in. He’d later apologize.
Musically, “Ain’t No Cure” and “A Cigarette” were streaming hits that helped power two studio albums before his most recent. “Need To” is the most streamed song on Spotify from Own Worst Enemy.
