5 Seconds of Summer frontman Luke Hemmings and songwriter Sierra Deaton have welcomed their first child together. On Instagram, the couple offered a glimpse into their private life as they shared a carousel of images celebrating their baby girl. “Our best kept secret,” they captioned the post. “Written and Produced by Sierra and Luke Hemmings.”
The insight is not only rare but reluctant. In a comment on the post, Hemmings revealed that their intention in sharing the news is purely to get ahead of any further speculation or breaches of privacy. “In our perfect world, we’d keep our daughter a secret forever… for similar reasons we chose to never share our wedding photos from years ago,” he wrote.
Over the years, Deaton has become a target of vitriolic and often racist hate from disgruntled fans. In 2020, Hemmings tweeted, “People need to be more aware what their words can do to others mental health. My own girlfriend has experienced harassment and racism online and in real life by people who keep coming to our home just because we’re together and it’s heartbreaking to see the effects it has.”
Hemmings and Deaton scarcely use social media, but have shared their songwriting collaborations on the most recent 5 Seconds of Summer album, 5SOS5, and his solo albums When Facing the Things We Turn Away From and Boy. “Me and Sierra are very, very private,” Hemmings told Rolling Stone last year. “Songs and the music I make are windows into moments in my life. If you’re looking to understand more of me, that’s definitely the way to do it.”
Hemmings hinted at new music coming in the future, which pushed them to make the announcement. “Going into this next album cycle I’m very aware that her existence would inevitably leak,” he said on Instagram. “To avoid any speculation, we’re posting this now and humbly asking for everyone to respect her privacy. If you see us in public, please avoid taking or sharing photos of her as we don’t plan on publicizing her name, birthdate, or face any time in the near future.”
Hemmings is the second member of 5 Seconds of Summer to journey into fatherhood. Guitarist Michael Clifford welcomed his first child with his wife, Crystal, in October 2023. Earlier this summer — after he almost accidentally leaked the news in the acknowledgements of his debut solo album Sidequest — the couple announced that they’re currently expecting their second baby, another daughter.
