Is the future of country music doomed because of this new statistic that was just released?
According to Forbes, Gallup, who has been polling Americans about their drinking habits for over ninety years, the latest statistics show that alcohol consumption is way down.
Only 54 percent of Americans report drinking alcohol in the latest poll, which was taken in July.
That is a stark difference from the 60 percent of Americans who reported drinking alcohol from 1997-2023.
The figure then increased to 62 percent in 2023, and went back down again to 58 percent in 2024, before reaching a record-low 54 percent today.
As you likely know, alcohol and alcohol consumption is a major part of not only the country music lifestyle, but the lyrics and subjects of many country songs.
According to Medium, 40 percent of country music’s biggest hits in the past ten years mention alcohol in some form, so if the future generations are drinking less of it, will that affect the way that country music sounds, both live and recorded?
Think of how many of your favorite country songs mention either whiskey, tequila, wine or beer. If people stop drinking those things, the lyrics will soon become outdated and irrelevant if not adapted.
Could the future of country music include references to vaping instead?
Don’t count on it. Singing about missing your ex while taking a drag on your vape just doesn’t hit as hard as missing your ex while half a bottle deep on some Jack Daniels.
Now, if you are wondering when we drank the most in America, it was between 1974 and 1981, when 68 percent to 71 percent of Americans were drinkers.

According to Upgraded Points, Whiskey is the most popular alcohol in 18 states across America, with vodka coming in second, most popular in 15 states.
