Singer-songwriter Rachel Platten is re-recording several of her biggest hits, including her 2015 smash “Fight Song,” in an effort to reclaim control of her music like Taylor Swift.
In a post on Instagram Monday, Platten said she’ll drop her new album Fight Song (Rachel’s Version) on Sept. 26. Along with “Fight Song,” she said the collection will feature her other 2015 single, “Stand by You,” additional songs from her third album, Wildfire, plus “some live songs and a surprise from the vault.” Platten recorded the new album with Jon Levine, who also produced Wildfire.
As Platten noted, the re-record project lines up with the 10th anniversary of “Fight Song,” which peaked at Number Six on the Billboard Hot 100 (and later became a campaign song for Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential run). “I had no idea when I wrote these songs in moments of vulnerability that they would go on to change my life,” Platten said. “For a decade, they’ve lived out in the world, carrying their own weight. They’ve been parts of your moments of strength, doubt, and connection.”
Platten said she went about re-recording her old songs “not to change them, but to reclaim them,” adding that the new versions “are infused with the voice I have now, the wisdom I’ve gained, and the undeniable pride of owning my own masters.”
To that end, Platten said she was “grateful” to Swift “for bringing this conversation to light and empowering artists to take back control over their work, their stories, and their futures.” (Platten was one of Swift’s many guests during her 1989 tour, with the pair performing “Fight Song” together at the Philadelphia stop.)
Platten followed up Wildfire in 2017 with her fourth album, Waves. Only recently she did release a new record, I Am Rachel Platten, which came out in September 2024.
