Yellowstone star Cole Hauser is set to join his longtime friend Matthew McConaughey in a new series for Netflix, according to a new report — and the upcoming series has nothing to do with Yellowstone.
Are Matthew McConaughey + Cole Hauser Working on a New Show Together?
Deadline reports that Hauser — who starred as Rip Wheeler for all five seasons of Yellowstone — and McConaughey will both star in and serve as executive producers for an as-yet-untitled sports drama series.
According to sources, True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto is on board to helm the project in association with Skydance Sports, which is now part of Paramount.
Hauser and McConaughey first worked together on Dazed and Confused in 1993, and they’ve been friends for decades. Deadline reports that they have been batting around the idea for the new show for years.
What Is Matthew McConaughey + Cole Hauser’s New Show About?
Details about the upcoming project are scarce, but Deadline says the show will be set in the world of football, though it’s not clear if that will be college or professional football.
Sources tell Deadline that McConaughey and Hauser will play brothers in the upcoming series.
Is Cole Hauser Still Working on a Yellowstone Spinoff?
Yes. Hauser and his former Yellowstone co-star, Kelly Reilly, are set to star in a Yellowstone spinoff that will center around their characters, Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, with the working title of Dutton Ranch.

According to Deadline, Annette Bening is also attached to that series, for which no premiere date has been set.
It’s unclear if production has begun on that show, but Paramount CEO Chris McCarthy said in July that the series has been delayed until 2026.
Is Matthew McConaughey Going to Star in a Yellowstone Sequel?
Matthew McConaughey was reportedly in negotiations to head up another proposed Yellowstone sequel that was supposed to launch right after Yellowstone ended, but that appears to have fallen through.
In addition to the Hauser/Reilly show, there are multiple other Yellowstone spinoffs coming:
- The Madison stars Michelle Pfeiffer, former Suits star Patrick J. Adams and former Lost star Matthew Fox.
- Y: Marshals stars Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, following his character after the Duttons lost their ranch.
- 1944 is yet another Yellowstone prequel, following 1883 and 1923 and filling in more of the backstory of the Dutton family.
When Will Cole Hauser + Matthew McConaughey’s New Show Premiere?
Netflix has not officially confirmed the upcoming Hauser/McConaughey project, and no further details are yet available.
