America’s largest grocery-only chain is Kroger, and when you are that big, sometimes you have to close doors on some underperforming locations.
According to Grocery Dive, at least 39 Kroger locations across America are on the chopping block, awaiting the axe, with 18 of them already closed.
Kroger announced plans to trim some of the fat and close underperforming stores in June of 2025, but now they have officially earmarked the locations that are likely going to close.
These metropolitan areas are among the cities where Kroger is closing locations:
- Seattle
- Los Angeles
- Denver
- Houston
- Chicago
- Minneapolis
- Atlanta
- Washington, D.C.
- Miami
- Milwaukee
The Washington state area around Seattle is getting hit the hardest with the closures. Six Kroger stores in the area are affected, with several also closing around Chicago and Milwaukee.
Kroger’s sister grocery store brand, Harris Teeter, has already confirmed that it has closed five stores across three states, and seven more of the company’s grocery store brands — out of the more than 20 other sister brands linked to the company — are closing locations as well.
There is a lot of speculation that Kroger is trimming the fat after their failed merger with Albertsons and the resulting lawsuits that followed, but there is no evidence to hard-link those facts.
These grocery store closings are added to the retail closings that have been occurring more and more since the pandemic hit.
The fact that grocery stores were pegged for inflating prices recently, as inflation in America soared out of control, likely makes it sting a little less to customers who are still upset because of that.
How Many Kroger Stores Are There in America?
As of August 2025, according to Scrape Hero there are 1,255 Kroger stores in 16 states. That number included the ones that have already been shuttered recently.
What Does the Average Household Spend on Groceries Per Week?
According to U.S. News and World Report, $156 per week is the national average if you are single. The average American family spends $256 per week, with larger families topping out at around $331 per week.
