The single will appear on the rapper and singer’s upcoming studio album Vie, out Sept. 26
Doja Cat is claiming her position on the mantle of pop performers who consistently deliver knockout awards show performances. The rapper and singer returned to the MTV Video Music Awards for the first live performance of her new single “Jealous Type,” an Eighties-inspired record that will appear on her upcoming studio album Vie, out Sept. 26.
Her performance intentionally cut off VMA host LL Cool J with a broadcast of the star teasing her show and her special guest, Kenny G. When she broke out onto the stage, the set looked like something straight out of the decade that’s been inspiring her, with a multilevel checkerboard floor, kooky shapes, and bright colors. Looking like a child of Janet Jackson’s, her choreography was on point, complete with a rap break and moves complementing an electric guitarist and keytar player that got down behind her. “VMAs, let me hear you say ‘Oh, I’m jealous!’” she beckoned to the crowd as magenta confetti dropped in from the ceiling and got the party started.
Doja last appeared at the MTV VMAs in 2023, when she brought her Scarlet alter egos to the stage with a medley of “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red,” and “Demons.” She’s also returning as a nominee. “Jealous Type” scored a nomination for Song of the Summer, while Doja is also up for Best K-Pop for her appearance alongside Lisa and Raye on “Born Again.”
The three artists performed separately during a James Bond tribute at the 2025 Academy Awards. “I never get to sing like that and what I did was brave and scary as fuck for me,” Doja wrote on Instagram at the time. “I know a lot of people didn’t like it but a lot of people did and I feel good that I pushed myself.”
Doja is ready to get back to what she does best. “I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it’s popular,” she told V Magazine about her upcoming “pop-driven” album. “It starts to become a bit of a thing that’s viewed as a sport by people who are just bystanders to it, who enjoy it, but maybe also don’t respect it or what it is, which is just music … They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays.”
She collaborated with Jack Antonoff on Vie, which marks her fourth studio album since her 2018 debut Amala.
