My Morning Jacket Perform ‘Knot Comes Loose’ in ‘ACL’ Set

In addition to their hour-long performance, the band will enter the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame

Fresh off My Morning Jacket’s 20th anniversary reissue of Z, the band will appear on the latest episode of Austin City Limits. Jim James and company will also be inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame alongside the performance, with director Cameron Crowe presenting the award.

The band’s hour-long ACL set arrives on YouTube today ahead of its TV premiere on Oct. 18, and Rolling Stone has exclusive video of a performance of Z’s “Knot Comes Loose” that was cut from both broadcasts.

“‘Knot Comes Loose’ is just about being open to embracing change and overcoming fear — realizing that something that may seem so stuck or set in stone or trapped in its patterns can be released or set free with patience and love,” James said of the track in a statement.

My Morning Jacket will continue to celebrate Z on the road this fall with a series of concerts revolving around the 2005 album. “October 4 is the 20th anniversary of our album Z. It’s pretty wild to think about that,” James said. “To celebrate two decades of it being out in the ether, we’re excited to be turning five of our shows into special Z anniversary shows, where we’ll play that album — and some other songs, don’t worry — front to back.”

In a recent episode of the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast, James explained the meaning behind the LP’s one-letter title. “I thought it would be our last album. That’s why I named it Z,” James said. “Because I was entertaining taking my own life as well, and I was feeling so pessimistic that I was sure that [the album] wouldn’t work out. I was sure that it would suck and that everybody would hate it and that everything would collapse. That’s how powerful depression is. And thankfully, that wasn’t what happened.”

Earlier this year, My Morning Jacket released their 10th studio album, Is.
