Dog the Bounty Hunter star Duane Chapman says he’s feeling grateful after his son, Garry Chapman, has been reinstated as a police officer in Priceville, Ala.
Garry was terminated from his role last month due to his involvement in a fatal high speed chase that claimed the life of a 17-year-old student and sent six others to the hospital.
“Today, God showed up,” Chapman wrote in an emotional social media post after the Priceville City Council unanimously voted to overturn the firing on Monday (Oct. 13).
“After many prayers, my son [Garry] has officially been reinstated as an officer — cleared of any wrongdoing in the tragic pursuit that claimed the life of a young man,” the TV star and bounty hunter continued.
“From the beginning, [Garry] acted with honor, courage and integrity while doing his duty to protect and serve,” Chapman continued.
What Else Did Duane Chapman Say About the Tragedy?
In his statement, Chapman shared in the victim’s family’s grief.
“The real tragedy came from a suspect who chose to flee — and whose reckless actions caused a heartbreaking loss that will never be forgotten,” he continued.
“While we are grateful to see justice done and [Garry]’s name cleared, our hearts remain heavy for the family that lost their son,” Chapman added. “As a father, I can understand that pain all too well, and our prayers will continue to be with them.”
What Happened During the Deadly High-Speed Chase?
The incident occurred on Sept. 6, when Garry attempted to stop a suspect who he believed to be committing traffic violations and possibly DUI.
The chase ensued both on the Interstate and on Main Street in Hartselle, and ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle into a car carrying several teens.
One of those, 17-year-old Tristan Hollis, died of his injuries.
Garry was initially placed on administrative leave, and on Sept. 27, Priceville Police Chief Jerry Holmes confirmed that his employment had ended.
How Was Garry Chapman Reinstated As a Police Officer? What Happens Next?
The Priceville City Council unanimously voted to allow Garry to return to work.
According to 48 WAFF, he will be on a 10-day suspension without pay, and will then return to his post on probation. He must also retrain with a supervisor when he comes back to the force.
